Ho Chi Minh City at a glance

Ho Chi Minh City — still widely called Saigon, especially in its central District 1 — is Vietnam's largest city and the commercial engine of the south. It is also the busiest gateway for southern Vietnam itineraries: Tan Son Nhat International Airport sits only a few kilometres from downtown, which keeps arrival transfers short even in the city's famous traffic.

The centre is compact enough to cover on foot or by short taxi hops — the Reunification Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, the century-old Ben Thanh Market and the Saigon Central Post Office all sit within walking distance of most 4-5 star hotels. A half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels or a full day on the Mekong Delta are the two most-booked add-ons, and both leave and return within the day.

Weather runs on two seasons rather than four: a dry season from December to April that is the easiest to sell for sightseeing, and a wet season from May to November with short, heavy afternoon showers that rarely disrupt a full day's itinerary. Ho Chi Minh City is also the road and flight gateway to Mui Ne, Da Lat, Phu Quoc and Da Nang, so it works as a strong opening or closing city for a south-to-central program.
