Da Lat at a glance
Da Lat sits at around 1,500 metres in Vietnam's Central Highlands, and the elevation is the whole story: while the coast and southern cities run hot and humid, Da Lat stays mild year-round, which earned it the nickname 'City of Eternal Spring'. French colonists built it as a hill-station retreat in the early 1900s, and the villa architecture, pine forests and manicured gardens still carry that legacy.
The town centres on Xuan Huong Lake, with the surrounding hills given over to flower farms, coffee and vegetable plantations that supply much of southern Vietnam, plus a scattering of pagodas, waterfalls and golf courses in the hills beyond. It has its own airport, Lien Khuong (DLI), and is also reached by road from Ho Chi Minh City or Mui Ne, about 4-5 hours either way.
Da Lat's cooler climate and slower pace make it a natural counterpoint to a beach or city-heavy itinerary — it is often the stop where a multi-centre south Vietnam program changes tempo, and it appeals particularly to honeymoon and couples' travel.
