Da Nang at a glance
Da Nang is central Vietnam's largest city and its main aviation gateway, with direct domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and a growing number of international routes. Its own beachfront — My Khe Beach, once nicknamed China Beach — gives it a resort identity that Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City don't have, which makes it a strong base for groups who want beach time alongside sightseeing.
Da Nang's real value on an itinerary, though, is location: Hoi An's ancient town is about 45 minutes south, and Hue's imperial sites are roughly 2.5-3 hours north by road, or a shorter, more scenic drive over the Hai Van Pass. That makes Da Nang the natural base for a 3-centre central Vietnam loop without changing hotels every night.
In the hills west of the city, Ba Na Hills brings a French hill-station theme park and the Golden Bridge — the pair of giant stone hands holding up a walkway — which has become one of the most photographed sites in Vietnam and a reliable half-day add-on for almost any group.
