Package overview

Three nights in Hanoi with a full city tour and an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise open this trip the same way as our other seven-day north-opening itineraries. From there, a short domestic flight to Da Nang shifts the routing to Vietnam's central coast, using the hotel as a base for two nights rather than continuing on to a third city.

Da Nang's own sights — the Cham Museum and Marble Mountain on arrival, an evening in Hoi An's Old Town and a full day at Ba Na Hills — give this version a heritage-and-scenery focus rather than the history-led finish of the Ho Chi Minh City option or the beach resort of Nha Trang. It suits clients happy to fly home from central Vietnam rather than the south.

Trip highlights

  • Domestic flight from Hanoi to a two-night Da Nang base

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi (about a 45-minute, 25 km transfer from the airport)

Hanoi's tree-lined boulevards, French colonial buildings and lakeside pagodas set the pace for the days ahead. Arrival afternoons are usually spent close to the hotel, with time for an optional walk through the Old Quarter's narrow lanes of shophouses and street-food stalls.

Day 2: Hanoi city tour

The full-day tour covers Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and stilt house, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature, then Quan Thanh Temple and Tran Quoc Pagoda beside West Lake. After lunch the group visits the Museum of Ethnology, finishing at Hoan Kiem Lake with a walk through the Old Quarter.

Day 3: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, board overnight cruise (about 3 hours / 170 km one way)

An 8am pickup starts the drive through the Red River Delta's rice fields and villages to Ha Long Bay. Once aboard the traditional junk, the cruise passes Dinh Huong, Ga Choi, Dog and Sail Islands, stops at a pearl-farming site and paddles into Luon Cave, with a swim near Ti Top Island before sunset and dinner served on board.

Day 4: Ha Long Bay to Hanoi, Surprise Cave (about 3 hours / 170 km one way)

A Tai Chi session on the sundeck opens the morning before the cruise visits Surprise Cave, entered by around 100 steps and explored on a roughly hour-long walk. After brunch, the boat passes Ga Choi Island, Binh Phong Mountain and Tortoise Island before disembarking at Tuan Chau port for the road transfer back to Hanoi.

Day 5: Fly to Da Nang, Cham Museum and evening Hoi An walk

The morning flight from Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport reaches Da Nang in about ninety minutes. After checking in, the afternoon covers the Cham Museum's collection of sandstone sculpture and the cave shrines and viewpoints of Marble Mountain.

In the evening, a walking route through Hoi An's Old Town takes in Tan Ky House, the Chinese assembly halls, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the old market, before the return drive to Da Nang.

Day 6: Ba Na Hills excursion

Ba Na Hills, a hill station known locally as the central region's answer to Sa Pa or Da Lat, is reached by one of Southeast Asia's longest cable car systems. The day covers the French Village's wine cellar, the flower-lined Golden Bridge supported by giant stone hands, Linh Ung Pagoda and Fantasy Park, with panoramic views over Da Nang from King Peak's Linh Tu Pagoda at 1,487 metres.

Day 7: Departure from Da Nang

The morning is free until transfer to Da Nang International Airport for the onward or homeward flight, closing a routing that pairs Hanoi and Ha Long Bay with two nights based in Da Nang rather than continuing further south.

Frequently asked questions

How does this differ from the Hanoi–Halong–Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang seven-day options?
The itinerary is identical through the Ha Long Bay cruise; the difference is entirely in the third leg, which here spends two nights in Da Nang for Ba Na Hills and Hoi An rather than continuing to Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang or Sa Pa.
Is the Hanoi to Da Nang flight included as a domestic sector?
Yes, the routing includes a short domestic flight between Hanoi and Da Nang; ground transfers at both ends run on a private or shared basis depending on how the tour is booked.
What's the best season for Ba Na Hills and Hoi An?
February to August generally gives drier conditions in central Vietnam. The cable car up to Ba Na Hills can also close briefly in high winds, which are more common from September to December.
Can Hue be added as a day trip from Da Nang?
Yes, Hue is commonly added as a full-day excursion from Da Nang with a Perfume River boat trip, though it isn't included in this particular six-night routing.
Can vegetarian or Jain meals be arranged on the Ha Long Bay cruise?
Yes, with advance notice at booking — the cruise operator needs dietary requirements flagged before departure day, since the onboard kitchen has limited scope to adjust once underway.
