The first three nights in Ho Chi Minh City cover Cu Chi Tunnels, a full-day Mekong Delta excursion and the city's colonial landmarks on foot, before a domestic flight shifts the trip to Da Nang for an equal three nights. On arrival, the Cham Museum and Marble Mountain lead into an evening walk through Hoi An's Old Town.
The following two days cover Ba Na Hills' Golden Bridge and cable car, then a full-day Hue excursion with stops at Minh Mang Tomb and Hai Van Pass along the way, followed by a Perfume River boat trip past Thien Mu Pagoda and the Forbidden City. Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City (about a 30-minute, 10 km transfer from the airport)
Ho Chi Minh City, still widely known as Saigon, moves at a faster pace than Hanoi, with a skyline of new towers rising over French colonial landmarks and a street life that runs well into the night. Arrival afternoons are usually spent settling in, with an optional first walk through the downtown district near the hotel.
Day 2: Cu Chi Tunnels and half-day Ho Chi Minh City tour (about 1½ hours / 70 km one way)
The morning covers the Cu Chi Tunnels, the underground network built by Vietnamese resistance fighters during decades of conflict, with a chance to see original and widened tunnel sections and wartime displays.
In the afternoon, the tour continues on foot through the former Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Old Saigon Post Office, Dong Khoi Street, the Continental Hotel, the Opera House and City Hall.
Day 3: Mekong Delta tour (about 2 hours / 80 km one way)
The drive southwest crosses into the Mekong Delta, Vietnam's rice bowl, for a boat cruise along the Vam Xep canal to a small islet and a walk through shaded, palm-lined trails past local villages. Stops along the way take in a bee farm, a small coconut workshop and a rowing-boat passage through narrow canals before returning to the city by road.
Day 4: Fly to Da Nang, Cham Museum and evening Hoi An walk
The morning flight from Tan Son Nhat Airport reaches Da Nang in about ninety minutes. After checking in, the afternoon covers the Cham Museum's collection of sandstone sculpture and the cave shrines and viewpoints of Marble Mountain.
In the evening, a walking route through Hoi An's Old Town takes in Tan Ky House, the Chinese assembly halls, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the old market, before the return drive to Da Nang.
Day 5: Ba Na Hills excursion
Ba Na Hills, a hill station known locally as the central region's answer to Sa Pa or Da Lat, is reached by one of Southeast Asia's longest cable car systems. The day covers the French Village's wine cellar, the flower-lined Golden Bridge supported by giant stone hands, Linh Ung Pagoda and Fantasy Park, with panoramic views over Da Nang from King Peak's Linh Tu Pagoda at 1,487 metres.
Day 6: Hue day trip, Perfume River boat cruise (about 2 hours / 100 km one way)
The drive to Hue crosses Hai Van Pass, with stops at Minh Mang Tomb and the beach town of Lang Co along the way.
In Hue, a boat trip on the Perfume River calls at Thien Mu Pagoda and Hon Chen Temple, followed by visits to the Forbidden City and Dong Ba Market, before the return drive to Da Nang in the evening.
Day 7: Departure from Da Nang
The morning is free until transfer to Da Nang International Airport for the onward or homeward flight, closing a routing that skips Hanoi entirely in favor of south and central Vietnam.
