Phu Quoc at a glance
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, administered as part of Kien Giang province and sitting in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Cambodia. For agents building a Vietnam programme, it is the closing beach leg rather than a standalone destination - most clients arrive on a short domestic flight into Phu Quoc International Airport after time in Ho Chi Minh City or the Mekong Delta.
More than half the island sits inside Phu Quoc National Park, so alongside the resort strip along the southwest coast there is genuine jungle, hiking trail and wildlife to sell as well as beach time. Sun World's Hon Thom Nature Park and cable car - one of the longest three-rope cable car systems in the world - links the mainland to Hon Thom island, while Vinpearl Safari and Vin Wonders give the destination a strong family angle that a pure beach stop does not offer.
Duong Dong, the island's main town, has the day and night markets that give clients a taste of local life between resort days, and the island's wartime history is preserved at the former Phu Quoc Prison site. We usually position Phu Quoc as the finishing leg of a southern Vietnam trip - a short Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc break, or a longer loop that adds Mui Ne's desert dunes before the beach.
