Phuket at a glance
Phuket is surrounded by some of the best-known beaches in Southeast Asia — Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata Yai, Kata Noi and Mai Khao among them — with Laem Phromthep Viewpoint regarded as one of the best sunset spots in the country. It is a big enough island to genuinely vary a stay by area: lively Patong for nightlife, quieter Kata or Kamala for families, and the resort belt near Mai Khao for guests who want distance from the crowds.
Old Phuket Town is the other side of the island's appeal — 19th-century Sino-Portuguese shophouses, art cafés and a genuinely walkable old quarter that works well as a half-day cultural add-on to an otherwise beach-focused stay. The island's food scene runs the same range, from street-food stalls to fine dining, which makes it easy to price at different budget levels for the same itinerary length.
Connectivity is Phuket's biggest advantage over other Thai islands: the airport takes both international and domestic flights, road links to Patong take about 40 minutes from town, and Rassada Pier — about 4 km southeast of Phuket Town — runs regular ferries to Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Krabi, which is why Phuket so often anchors multi-island itineraries.
