Package overview

This itinerary runs the classic overland route across Flores, from Ende on the east coast to the port town of Labuan Bajo on the west, taking in the three-colored crater lakes of Kelimutu, the traditional village of Bena near Bajawa, and the highland town of Ruteng along the way. The trip finishes with a boat excursion into Komodo National Park, landing on Rinca Island to see Komodo dragons in their natural habitat before continuing to Pink Beach.

It is the more compact of Indochina Signature's two Flores-to-Komodo programs, covering the same core route as the 7D6N Flores Adventure tour but skipping its extra snorkeling stop at Riung Marine Garden. Agents should position this version for clients who want the overland-plus-Komodo experience without adding a seventh day, keeping in mind that road travel across Flores' mountainous terrain takes up a meaningful part of most days on this route.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Ende to Moni village

The tour begins in Ende on Flores' east coast, a regional hub reached by domestic flight, and continues overland to Moni village, the small highland base used for visiting Kelimutu the following morning. The drive passes through Flores' characteristic hill and terrace landscape, with the route taking up most of the day.

Day 2: Moni village, Kelimutu Lake, Ende and on to Bajawa

An early start is typical for Kelimutu, the volcano known for its three crater lakes that each hold a different mineral color and shift shade over time, before the group returns via Ende and continues driving to Bajawa in the Ngada highlands. Breakfast is included, and this is one of the longer driving days on the route.

Day 3: Bajawa, Bena village, Aimere village and on to Ruteng

The day includes a stop at Bena, a traditional Ngada village known for its megalithic stone structures and thatched houses arranged around a central ceremonial ground, and Aimere village, before the drive continues to Ruteng, the main town of the Manggarai highlands. Breakfast is included.

Day 4: Ruteng, Cancar and Labuan Bajo, with a transfer to Rinca Island

The route passes Cancar, known for its distinctive spider-web-shaped rice terraces visible from a nearby viewpoint, before reaching Labuan Bajo, the gateway port to Komodo National Park, and transferring by boat to Rinca Island for the first stretch of the marine park section. Lunch and dinner are included on this day.

Day 5: Rinca Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach and back to Labuan Bajo

This is the main national park day, with a guided walk on Rinca Island to see Komodo dragons in the wild, a stop on Komodo Island itself, and a visit to Pink Beach, named for its coral-tinted sand, before returning to Labuan Bajo by boat. Breakfast and lunch are included.

Day 6: Check-out and onward travel

The trip ends with hotel check-out in Labuan Bajo, from where guests continue to their next destination, typically by domestic flight onward to Bali or Jakarta. Breakfast is included before the final transfer, closing out the overland-to-island route that defines this itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How much of each day is spent driving?
The Flores overland sections cross mountainous terrain, so several days involve multiple hours of road travel between towns; this should be flagged to clients who prefer a slower pace.
Are Komodo dragons guaranteed to be seen on Rinca Island?
Sightings are very likely but not guaranteed, since the dragons move freely within the park; rangers guide all walks for safety.
Is a domestic flight needed to start or end this tour?
Yes, this itinerary starts in Ende and ends in Labuan Bajo, both served by domestic flights from Bali or Jakarta; these flights are not included and should be quoted separately.
Is snorkeling included at Pink Beach or Komodo Island?
The itinerary includes a boat visit to these sites; whether snorkeling gear or time in the water is included should be confirmed with the operator, as this varies by boat and season.
What is the best season to travel this route?
The dry season, roughly April to November, gives more reliable road conditions on Flores and calmer seas for the Komodo boat sections.
